Compact by Design is an initiative we created to identify products that, while they may not always appear significantly different, have a more efficient design. By removing excess air and water, these products require less packaging and become more efficient to ship. At scale, these small differences in product size and weight lead to substantial reductions in carbon emissions.

Our focus is on sustainability, as even minor changes in product size and weight can result in lower carbon footprints. Here are just a few of the many ways products can qualify for the Compact by Design program:

Concentration and Compaction: Products that are concentrated or compacted, requiring less packaging material and shipping volume, can qualify. For example, laundry detergent that is sold in a more compact bottle rather than a large jug.

Refinement and Optimization: Products that have been refined or optimized to reduce unnecessary components or materials can also qualify. This includes items like paper towels that are designed to be more compact and use less material per sheet.

Density and Efficiency: Higher-density products that pack more functionality into a smaller space are eligible. This could apply to certain food items, consumer electronics, or office supplies that achieve the same purpose with less overall volume.

Substitution and Replacement: Products that replace less efficient alternatives with more compact versions can qualify. A prime example would be replacing individual plastic bottles of water with a larger refillable container.

Reduction and Minimization: Items that actively reduce excess packaging or components beyond what is strictly necessary for the product's core purpose are well-suited for Compact by Design. This might include minimalist product designs or packaging that eliminates unnecessary layers.

The key principle underlying Compact by Design is that small, seemingly minor adjustments to product size and weight can have a significant cumulative impact when scaled across millions of shipments and customer purchases. By identifying and promoting these optimized products, we aim to incrementally reduce the carbon footprint of the products our customers enjoy.
